Do fleas fly?
It seems ridiculous but many people are still wondering about the “flying” ability of fleas. As we have discussed in a recent article “Do fleas have wings?”, fleas are WINGLESS. You can see from the picture below that fleas don’t have wings. Obviously, they can’t fly.
However, they can JUMP extremely far and high thanks to the last pair of legs. The distance can be up to 200 times more than their sizes. Just imagine that if a flea is as tall as you, it will jump higher than the Empire State Building.
Of course, people have known that this ability is resulted from a special protein called resilin stored in fleas, but they don’t know exactly where this protein is located. Last year, scientists from Cambridge University conducted a research using high-speed camera and mathematical model to prove that fleas jump from their toes (in academic terms, we call these toes “tibiae and tarsin”) not from knees as we always thought.
Why so many people ask this question?
First, as we have told you in previous paragraphs, fleas can JUMP very high and far, so many people believe that they can fly. The fact that fleas don’t have wings, so they can’t fly. Another interesting fact is that when fleas have found their victims, they will stay there for whole lives,
Second, there are some black tiny creatures keep flying around the house and the pets, so people think that they are fleas in house. Sadly, they aren’t. What keep “buzzing” are actually fruit flies or gnats. While fleas feed on blood, gnats and fruit flies prefer fruit and vegetable. They are often active in summer when fleas are invading, so people have been mistaken about these species. If you don’t believe me, you can take a banana, leave it in the air for 1 day then put into a bag. After a few days, you can see some newly born flies or gnats come from the banana.
Third, they are too small to see. You can’t use your eyes to determine whether these tiny creatures are fleas or not. In most cases, people will put them in worse position. And what else can it be beside the vampire-like insect?
In order to get rid of these annoying creatures, you should keep your house clean and equip your windows with fly nets or screen them. It’s also recommended to use some homemade traps to catch and eliminate them.
Now, I think you have your own answer to the question “Do fleas fly?”
